Deck Types

There are two mains types of decking materials used predominantly being wood or composite. Both have there advantages and disadvantages which we've tried to explain in brief below. Budget is the biggest factor in decision making as composite is a dearer product for a multitude of reasons. Please look through the photo gallery for design inspiration and many different options in board choices.

Wooden Decks

Wooden decks are beautiful underfoot and can age lovely, the option also to be able to change colour with many different treatments out there to chose from.

We prefer to use a 6" board at 32mm thick as these provide the longest life. Many different boards are available  and it is really a personal choice and depending on budget.  Another plus point also is the availability in many different lengths to avoid the need to join as much.  We recommend using decking oil twice a year to maintain the waterproofness.

We use spacers when installing the boards to ensure an equidistant gap across the whole deck, also we take the time to ensure the screw line is parallel across the boards.

Pro's - varying lengths of boards, ability to change colour, pricing.      Cons' - maintenance, visible fixings, cleaning and potential to rot.

Composite Decks

The market place with composite deck boards is a minefield with varying quality and pricing. We're recommended installers for many suppliers and have installed many different companies products over the years allowing us to have an informed opinion of products.

There are 3 price bands in the market place being budget, Mid range and Premium all giving different warranties from suppliers. Again budget comes in to the decision making process when deciding and we will explain the characteristics of each level with you.

Fitment - Again many options for fitment with varying pricing. We use a hidden fitting system with 2 options; a stainless steel clip and screw giving a perfect 3mm gap between the boards or a plastic fitment providing a 6mm gap both of which don't rust and provides a fitting to match the warranty on the board.

Composite will not rot hence the warranty and only cleaning throughout the year as and when required.
